Don W. Kiassing, Interim President, SJSU

(May, 27, 2010) – Don W. Kassing, who retired as president of San Jose State University in 2008, has been appointed as interim president of the university following the departure of Jon Whitmore who was recently named as CEO of ACT, Inc., an international not-for-profit corporation.

Kassing served in various capacities at the campus since 1993, and was named president in 2005 after serving in an interim capacity for a year.

“We are very fortunate that Don and Amy Kassing have agreed to give up their retirement, and come back to San Jose from their home in Phoenix,” said CSU Board Trustee Herbert L. Carter.  “Don served San Jose State in an outstanding manner, and the CSU Board of Trustees is extremely grateful and appreciative that he has agreed to serve as interim president.”

CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed said, “Don will be welcomed back to the campus and we know that it will be in the hands of a proven leader with a record of stability and familiarity with the campus, students and community.”

Kassing will assume the interim appointment on August 1, and will serve until a presidential search is completed sometime in 2011.  His salary will be set at the CSU Board of Trustees meeting in July.

Check out the Thursday edition of the Mercury News for a great story on the success of “Bye-Bye Bin Laden” and its SJSU faculty and student creators. When it was released earlier this fall, it was believed to be the first feature-length animated film from an American university.

Cinequest released the film on DVD. Writer Bruce Newman suggests “the center of the college cinema universe may be inching northward.” It’s another feather in the cap for SJSU’s outstanding film program and talented students who have also experienced unprecedented national success at Campus MovieFest competitions.

Once again, SJSU has earned high marks in US News and World Report

Once again, SJSU has earned high marks in US News and World Report

Once again, San José State University has excelled in the U.S. News & World Report college rankings. The 2010 edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” now available at newsstands and online, shows San José State ranked 12th overall among the West’s top public universities offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees, one place ahead of last year.

“It is wonderful to receive national recognition for our hard work,” President Jon Whitmore said. “This shows San José State is moving forward even during troubled times.”

SJSU also ranked sixth for racial diversity among universities in the West offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

SJSU’s Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering received top marks, ranking 19th nationwide among engineering schools offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. San José State University’s undergraduate computer and industrial/manufacturing programs were ranked among the top five in the nation, the same as last year. Read more.

South Bay Water Recycling and the Santa Clara Valley Water District have recognized San José State for its commitment to protecting the environment through the use of recycled water since 1999. SJSU’s efforts resulted in more than 20 million gallons of drinking water saved in 2008, enough to supply about 150 South Bay households for one year. President Jon Whitmore received the award on behalf of the university at a recent event. The awards program, the first in its recent years, recognizes industrial users who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to recycled water, which SJSU uses at its co-generation power plant and South Campus athletic fields.
