Earth Day at SJSU

Mayor Chuck Reed to Speak on San Jose’s Green Vision During Sustainability Week at SJSU

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed will give the keynote address for Sustainability Week at 3:15 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in Engineering 189. The public is invited to engage Mayor Reed in conversation on newly-formed collaborations between the city and the university, as well as the progress the city is making on its award-winning Green Vision program. This event is free, open to the public and wheelchair accessible. Earth Day originated with a proposal made by San Jose State alumnus and U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson.
San Jose’s Green Vision encompasses such far-reaching goals as creating 25,000 clean-tech jobs, reducing the city’s per capita energy use by 50 percent, acquiring 100 percent of the city’s electricity from clean and renewable sources, diverting all waste away from landfills, and planting 100,000 new trees by 2022.  San Jose State has begun collaborating with the city on developing a green workforce and supporting green building projects. These are just a few facets of SJSU efforts to further embrace sustainability throughout campus.
Sustainability Week, beginning Monday, April 19, is presented by the Environmental Resource Center in cooperation with the Office of the President’s Sustainability Initiative and Associated Students of SJSU.  Campus sponsors include: the Career Center, Spartan Shops, Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering, Environmental Club, Nutrition Education Action Team, and the Environmental Studies Department. Other sponsors include the city of San Jose, Veggielution Community Farm, Whole Foods Market, Sacred Heart Community Service and California Rare Fruit Growers.
Sustainability Week events are all free and open to the public, including a presentation on recent sustainability efforts at SJSU (Monday), panels on green careers and corporate environmental and social responsibility (Tuesday), a special session with Rosemary Cambra, chairwoman of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe (Wednesday), and a memorial service for Frank Schiavo, renowned environmental activist and SJSU educator (Thursday).
San Jose State has embraced environmental activism, in a variety of forms, over the years.  The school’s Environmental Studies Department, one of the oldest in the country, was founded in 1970 by internationally recognized renewable energy expert and architect Donald Aitken. That year, as part of a weeklong series of events called the Survival Faire, a group of SJSU students purchased a car and buried it on campus in a show of disdain for internal combustion engines and the pollution of the environment.

Board Member Melissa Dyrdahl named “2010 Woman of Influence”

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Melissa DyrdhalSan Jose, Calif, March 24, 2010 –– San Jose State University Alumni Association board member Melissa Dyrdahl has been named one of the “2010 Women of Influence in Silicon Valley” by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. Dyrdahl serves as the association’s vice president for marketing and membership and will be honored at a dinner at The Fairmont Hotel in San Jose on April 8.
“The women listed exemplify many of the attributes that make Silicon Valley a global leader in business, philanthropy and public policy. The experience and skills these women demonstrate have helped to innovate and shepherd the valley to success,” said James MacGregor, Business Journal publisher.
The award recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of women who are leaders in either the private, public or not- for-profit sectors, who have quickly climbed the corporate ladder or branched out to start their own companies, and who give back to their communities as board members, volunteers and as role models. Women are nominated by their community and selected by a panel of judges. Dyrdahl was one of 100 women chosen for the honor.
“I am very excited and honored to be chosen as a woman of influence in Silicon Valley,” says Dyrdahl.  “As a San Jose native, I enjoy working to ensure we have a vibrant community to be proud of.”
Dyrdahl’s involvement extends well past SJSU as she also serves as board chair with the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV).  Dyrdahl also co-founded  Bring Light Inc. (www.bringlight.com), a website for social change that connects donors and charities for more informed and effective online fundraising. She is also on the board of Resource Interactive, the largest woman-owned agency in the country.
“Melissa brings a rare combination of passion and analytical thought to every project and I am thrilled to see her recognized for all the time and effort she contributes to our community,”  said Paul Richardson, SJSU Alumni Association executive director. “Melissa has been an exemplary leader within the San Jose State alumni community and also serves as the first Executive-in-Residence for the College of Business.”
Previously, Dyrdahl was Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing at Adobe Systems where she was a member of the executive team responsible for growing the company from $800M to almost $3B. Under her leadership and vision, the Adobe brand became one of the world’s most recognized technology and consumer brands. In addition, she was responsible for the company’s philanthropy and community affairs and was instrumental in development of the Adobe Foundation.

SJSU Qualifies Six for CMF International Finale

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

The San Jose State University Alumni Association is excited to announce six student films have been selected as finalists for the Campus MovieFest International Grand Finale.  Campus MovieFest (CMF) is the world’s largest student film festival and a premier outlet for the next generation of filmmakers that began eight years ago at Emory University.  They provided fellow students with everything they needed — including camcorders and Apple laptops — to make movies in one week. Since then, more than 250,000 students have told their stories on the big screen, receiving all the necessary technology and training for free thanks to corporate partners and schools.

The SJSU Alumni Association hosts Campus MovieFest as one of the main student Homecoming events each year.  Last year SJSU set a record by placing 4 films out of a possible 16 movies in the finale. This year SJSU has qualified six movies for the finale!  “You get to see the the complexity of our campus through the rich content and story lines in the movies.  It’s one of the events I look forward to the most during the year,” said Paul Richardson, Executive Director of the SJSU Alumni Association.

The Alumni Association will be hosting an alumni and student reception prior to the International Finale in Las Vegas on June 12, with more details to be released at a later date.

Grand International Finale June 12, 2010 host at the Wynn Las Vegas.
